Science Fiction Movie Review: The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951)

Review by: Nadiye

When I think of a classic science fiction film, I think of the 1951 film, The Day The Earth Stood Still. Most people think of Star Wars or Star Trek but I believe this film defines what classic science fiction is all about. The film The Day The Earth Stood Still, takes on the task of confronting humankind with the flaws it possesses. With a message to stop the misuse of atomic technology that would threaten the Universe, including the planet Earth itself, Klaatu, a handsome, charming and mysterious alien (played by Michael Rennie) is ignored by the authorities and military of Earth. He is confronted with violence when he comes in peace. He warns of the dire consequences of the misuse of atomic technology and that if his warning is not taken seriously, it will lead to Earth’s ultimate destruction by his Robot companion Gort.

Facts of the Film:
Year Released: 1951
Starring: Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal and Sam Jaffe
Producer: Julian Blaustein
Director: Robert Wise
Screenplay by: Edmund H. North
Based on a Story by: Harry Bates
Feature Run Time: 88 minutes
An aspect of the film that makes it so memorable is the orchestrated electronic soundtrack music. This was very influential in defining the early sound of science fiction cinema, with its atmospheric and eerie use of the theremin (an early electronic instrument). Overall the film works well due to its fine acting, locations, special effects, music and plot. I give this film 4.5/5.
